Land Acknowledgments are recognized as a common practice by individuals and organizations across North American public and private institutions, education programs, and businesses all over the landscapes owned by Indigenous Peoples.  Land Acknowledgements are crucial for giving the recognition and honor to Indigenous Nations that have a unique relationship with their land and people.  But where do we start, and how do we do this in a respectful and meaningful way? Many questions have been raised about the role of providing a land acknowledgment and people have often expressed concerns about how to do a proper land acknowledgment that is not based on a rote format written by a governing body and presented at the beginning of an event, workshop, class, or conference without any real content, meaning or understanding.

What will I learn?

  • Discover ways to learn about the Indigenous peoples relationship to their land and identity since time immemorial
  • Understand Indigenous perspectives of land acknowledgement (communal relationships)
  • Learn personal understandings of land acknowledgements
  • Identify strategies to create transformative and actionable land acknowledgements
