This series of 6 workshops aims to bring faculty together to share promising practices for supporting international students' academic success. Faculty participants will be provided with opportunities to develop a holistic understanding of international students within TRU’s multicultural, multilingual setting.

By the end of this series, faculty members will be able to:

  1. Recognize the diversity of the international student body at TRU and describe some of the specific needs and challenges they may face;
  2. Explore the complexity of acculturation and how it influences the attitudes and behaviours of our students;
  3. Appropriately assess international students’ English proficiency and interpret its relationship to academic success;
  4. Incorporate academic language learning in teaching and modify teaching pedagogies when necessary;
  5. Discuss the struggles in assessment and plan appropriate assessment strategies for international students learning;
  6. Review international students as holistic learners and further recognize the broader social contexts that impact international students' learning.

This first workshop will start with a diverse panel of international students at TRU to discuss their learning experiences, academic challenges, and needs. Faculty members will then be invited to ask the panel questions. After the panel, we will debrief and discuss our learning together.
